The Hard Road of Community Involvement — And Why It’s Worth It

Updated: Sep 1

Building something meaningful in a community is never easy. At Dolan Rising, we’ve learned firsthand that involvement doesn’t just mean showing up for the victories; it means rolling up our sleeves for the hard work, the disagreements, and the slow, steady process of building trust.

The Challenge of True Involvement

Community involvement is messy. People come with different perspectives, priorities, and lived experiences. Some are eager for change, while others are cautious or skeptical. Coordinating schedules, aligning values, and finding common ground can feel overwhelming.

For organizations like Dolan Rising, which exist to shape not only trails and land use but also the spirit of collaboration in Mohave County, these challenges are magnified. We’re asking people to not only support our vision, but to contribute their time, their energy, and sometimes even their patience.

Why It Matters Anyway

Despite the difficulties, true community involvement is the backbone of lasting progress. Trails don’t thrive because one organization wants them to — they thrive because local hikers, equestrians, families, and agencies agree to work together for a shared purpose.

When the community is engaged, projects transform from “someone else’s initiative” into “our project.” That ownership creates stewardship. Trails are better maintained, decisions are more inclusive, and the sense of pride is shared by everyone who touches the land.

The Long-Term Payoff

Every conversation, every compromise, and every step toward cooperation plants seeds for the future. Even when it feels slow, the trust built today will sustain the trails — and the community — for years to come.

Dolan Rising is committed to that process. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s the only way real, lasting change happens. Community involvement is challenging, sometimes frustrating, and always demanding. But it is also the most powerful tool we have to build a resilient, thriving future.
